“Travel is at its most rewarding when it ceases to be about your reaching a destination and becomes indistinguishable from living your life.”
- Paul Theroux

After graduating with a BFA in photography, I joined Canon USA in its San Francisco service center, gallery and showroom. On weekends I could borrow any lens I wanted -- a perk I took full advantage of.

A few years later I moved to Tokyo to work as a copywriter for Canon’s Advertising Production Department. I eventually began freelancing, writing articles illustrated with my photos for some of the English-language publications in Japan. I returned to the U.S. in 1992.

My photos have been published in books, magazines and newspapers internationally. In 2011 I self-published Traveling Light, a book of photo essays. A preview is available at:

I specialize in travel photography with an emphasis on people, cultural events, and wildlife. I've been fortunate to have traveled to over 30 countries -- my latest trip was to Cuba in February 2016. I have a special fondness for Asia after having lived in Japan -- birthplace of my daughter -- for ten years.

The photos in these galleries represent only a small fraction of my work and are available as prints or notecards. Please contact me if you would like to place an order or have questions or specific image needs. I welcome your comments.

Note: Although the watermark on the photos is no doubt distracting, it's necessary to protect my images from unauthorized use and circulation. It does not appear on any purchased prints.
